Martin arranges a school trek in memory of Dan Baker on the anniversary of his death for some of the students to take part in. Jai and Annie disappear much to his ire and things are exacerbated when Trey Palmer holds the everybody hostage by planting a bomb underneath the bus. The strain of recent events becomes apparent and Martin leaves for a cruise but not before appointing Gina Austin new principal.
They return however when Kane and Kirsty have relationship difficulties. Ollie is upset when Kane leaves for good but is happy to be back in the bay. Ross and Morag return to the bay the following year, It becomes apparent there are problems in the marriage when Morag appears stressed and Ross, forgetful. Ross disappears one night and is found wandering around by Charlie and tells her he is suffering from jetlag.
Charlie Buckton
She tells Charlie that she wants to hurt Romeo like he hurt her and tells Indigo about their one-night stand. Ruby blames Darryl Braxton for her mother's death and she pushes Casey away and their relationship ends. Ruby arrives in Summer Bay following the death of her grandmother Elsie Buckton. She and her boyfriend Pat Jenkins spend a few weeks together until she realises it is not going to work out, he leaves her. Her friends Jai Fernandez and Annie, who are in a relationship, make her feel lonely so she convinces herself she loves Miles. When her father Ross Buckton is diagnosed with Alzheimer's, she finds it hard to cope.
She rescues Annie Campbell from a storm drain and nearly dies. Charlie gets a promotion at work and she goes on a date with Angelo Rosetta. Charlie becomes a respected member of the community and she builds up strong friendships with Leah Patterson-Baker and Miles Copeland. After Ruby was born, Charlie wasn't ready to become a mother to Ruby and left her to be raised by Ross and Elsie. She stayed with her aunt Michelle until she was ready to be a mum for Ruby, but pretends to be her sister when she returned home.
Personal Life
Dodwell originally auditioned for the role of Nicole Franklin, however Tessa James became the successful candidate. Dodwell's agent informed her about Melody's "character breakdown" and she said that it "intrigued" her.Dodwell later decided to quit the serial in order to attend drama school in the United Kingdom. During The Great Storm, Tegan is in a car accident and Charlie attends to her, they talk about loving Brax. Tegan dies and Charlie learns Jake's brother, Hammer, has threatened her life. Brax pushes her out of the way, but she sustains an injury to her arm. One night, Charlie gets drunk and sleeps with Hugo Austin. Charlie admits to Angelo that she has feelings for him and they begin dating.
Angelo Rosetta
She is found by Ruby and Brax and taken to the hospital, when she undergoes surgery. Charlie is placed on life support and Ruby is told by Dr. Sid Walker Charlie will not breathe on her own again. Ruby and Brax decide Charlie's ventilator should be turned off and Charlie dies. She later takes a romantic interest in Xavier and they have a brief fling until he has to leave because of drug couriering. He later returns and she opts to resume their relationship, but his ex-girlfriend Freya Duric ruins things. She makes him sell illegal drugs again and Xavier is torn between her and Ruby.
After Roman complies and drinks the flask he finds himself hanging upside down from a cliff edge. Ross is determined to expose Jack and Martha as Sam's murderers but is unable to when Morag Bellingham proves that Sam committed suicide and he is forced to drop the charges. It is soon revealed that Ross and Morag were previously involved in a relationship after the collapse of Morag's marriage to Richard . Martin learns of Kirsty's relationship with Miles and he fires her but writes her a reference enabling her to get a job at the sands resort. Things escalate when Miles discovers Kirsty is working as an escort at the Sands, where Martin is paying for such services, leading to a confrontation between Miles and Martin.
Jai keeps the injury secret but collapses several days later while on a school trek with Annie. Dexter Walker takes an interest in Annie which does not sit well with Jai who wants to get back together with her. He is further upset when he finds Annie and Dexter kissing and refuses to listen to their explanations. Dodwell's casting was announced in December 2007, and had completed her drama HSC.
Ruby went on a journey of self-discovery and used men to redefine herself. Her relationship with Xavier Austin was characterised through their mutual friendship, which ended through lack of passion. She controversially fell in love with her music teacher Liam Murphy, the pair shared an emotional and creative connection through music.
After Jai feels guilty, they share a kiss and become a couple. Jai and Annie's respective guardians Miles and Irene Roberts try to keep the couple apart but they relent. In one storyline Martin forms an attraction to his school secretary Kirsty Sutherland . But she is unaware Martin uses escorts at the Sands resort.
In June 2012, TV Week's Miller reported that Breeds had filmed her final scenes and left Home and Away. Breeds told Miller that she could not discuss her departure because of her contract with the series. She added that "Ruby is still very much alive, I'm not free of Ruby just yet". Two months later, the Daily Star's Susan Hill announced that Ruby decides to leave Summer Bay after she makes "an emotional visit" to her mother's grave. She then realises that she needs to move on from recent events and the only way she can do that is to leave the Bay.
He later decides to settle down with Ruby much to her delight after Ruby exposes Freya and pays her to leave. When Xavier's brother Brendan (Kain O'Keeffe) arrives, he pushes Ruby away because he has learning difficulties, he feels they will act strangely. Ruby later bonds with Brendan; Xavier is pleased and they resume their relationship. Breeds acknowledged that from a musical stand point someone who inspires you creatively and acts as your muse, is a special bond.
Martin, who has taught Science for a number of years at Summer Bay High is introduced when Sally Fletcher introduces him as the new deputy, replacing the departed Donald Fisher . Following Sally's stabbing at the hands of Johnny Cooper , Martin is appointed principal by the school board. One of his first acts is to hire Jazz Curtis as his secretary, after she blackmails him, after seeing him at an illegal fight Ric Dalby is involved in.
Ruby Buckton
Although she was nervous, Breeds was pleased with the end result. Ruby has a brief fling with Casey Braxton after her romance with Romeo ends. When Ruby realises that Romeo is back with his girlfriend, she sleeps with Casey.
