Guests would enjoy wandering along the cliff top paths before taking tea and enjoying the view from the ‘Prospect Room’. New for this year, a replica of the Minton Medusa is on display in the house. The impressive, 14 inch centrepiece of Cliveden's 19th century tiled floor features a winged Medusa in spectacular colour with green snakes entwined in her hair. At the outbreak of World War One Cliveden hosted a military hospital operated by the Canadian Red Cross and a small Canadian World War One Cemetery can be found near the edge of the estate. Throughout its existence, Cliveden stood as a favourite destination for the political and cultural elite of the time. Popular with royalty, other notable visitors included President Franklin D. Roosevelt, Prime Minister Winston Churchill, Charlie Chaplin, George Bernard Shaw and Mahatma Gandhi. The three-bedroom Spring Cottage, where Christine Keeler stayed, is now, ironically, one of the hotel’s most sought-after rooms. A renovation to the spa was completed last year, and the infamous heated pool has opened once again, affording guests the opportunity to dip their toes (quite literally) into Cliveden’s steamy history. While entertaining a dinner party one evening, Bill Astor led his guests to show off a statue he'd installed near the pool.
The 375-acre (152 ha) gardens and woodlands are open to the public, together with parts of the house on certain days. Cliveden was one of the National Trust's most popular pay-for-entry visitor attractions, hosting 524,807 visitors in 2019. Cliveden has been the home to a Prince of Wales, two Dukes, an Earl, and finally the Viscounts Astor. As the home of Nancy Astor, wife of the 2nd Viscount Astor, Cliveden was the meeting place of the Cliveden Set of the 1920s and 1930s—a group of political intellectuals. Later, during the early 1960s, when it was the home of the 3rd Viscount Astor, it became the setting for key events of the notorious Profumo affair. After the Astor family stopped living there, by the 1970s, it was leased to Stanford University, which used it as an overseas campus. Today the house is leased to a company that runs it as a five-star hotel. The hotel features a concierge, babysitting/child services and luggage storage.
