The layout artist who designed it worked on the drawings for more than two days, but ultimately it was cut. To ensure their work did not go to waste, some staff members have used the drawings on Christmas cards and other studio-related notices. The showrunner David Mirkin attempted to put "as much blood and guts" into the episode as he could. This was because Mirkin was disappointed by complaints from Congress regarding the amount of violence in the show and their attempts for it to be censored. He later called it "the most [...] disturbing Halloween show ever".
Suddenly, the ball gets sucked up into the black hole and it grows very intense, sucking up Springfielders, except Maggie. The black hole sucks up Maggie's pacifier and sucks it, going off into the distance and leaving Maggie knowing she stopped the black hole. The staff also decided against the traditional continuation of featuring wraparound segments that were featured before each story in the preceding Treehouse of Horror episodes, to allow more time for the main stories. ―Maggie"Treehouse of Horror V", also known as "The Simpsons Halloween Special V", is the sixth episode of the sixth season, and the fifth episode in the Treehouse of Horror Series.
Opening Sequence
James Earl Jones features as the voice of an alternate-timeline Maggie. The episode was critically acclaimed, with The Shinning segment receiving the most praise. This episode is rated PG in the UK, despite being more graphic than the 12-rated "Treehouse of Horror X". This episode was originally rated TV-PG-D in America, but was eventually re-rated TV-14-DV. In all airings, the episode's ending is not removed but the blood is removed from Lunchlady Doris's apron.
He breaks into another room ("Daaavid Letterman!"), only to find Grandpa (another "D'oh"). After Marge attempts to contact the police to no avail, Bart uses his "shinning" to call Willie to help. Willie immediately rushes to assist, only to get an axe in the back by Homer . Homer grabs another axe from the collection hanging on the wall and pursues the family outside into the snow and is ready to kill them until Lisa discovers Willie's TV radio in the snow. Homer immediately drops the axe to watch Kent Brockman on Channel 6 News.
Nightmare Cafeteria
After he is gone, donuts begin to fall from the sky and Marge says, "It's raining again," implying that donuts are the rain in this timeline. In a parody of the late Stanley Kubrick's 1980 horror classic The Shining, the family is hired as caretakers of Mr. Burns' summer estate. On the way, Homer is forced to drive all the way back home to lock the front door to the house, and on the second drive, he is again forced to turn around to go and lock the back door to the house. On the third drive, Lisa points out that they left Grampa behind, but everyone ignores her and Homer keeps driving. It was built on an ancient Indian Burial Ground and was the setting of Satanic rituals, witch burning, and five John Denver Christmas specials.
The absence of his two favorite things sends Homer insane and a ghostly Moe makes a deal with him that he'll give him some beer if he kill his family. Homer makes good on his promise by making crazy noises and faces, then charges Marge. She runs over to a glass case enclosing a baseball bat, breaks the glass, and grabs it, threatening Homer. He warns her to give him the bat by backing her slowly up some stairs. Eventually he laughs and calls her a scaredy-cat, making hideous face.
Homer Goes Back in Time
"Deep Space Homer"The Simpsons episodeKent Brockman theorizes about ants conquering the world. This could have been done on purpose so the black hole would be visible. The song when Homer sees Marge for the first time, " Close to You" by The Carpenters , was played multiple times in the segment. The segment title is a pun on The Greatest Story Ever Told.This segment has the third title that makes a reference to this movie; the others were "The Wettest Stories Ever Told" and "The Greatest Story Ever D'ohed."
Eventually, Homer returns to sanity and eats happily with his favorite foods. Then, he hears Moe demanding to get out of the pantry to kill his family. When Homer refuses, Moe and a gang of ghouls drag him from the pantry. While the family is eating dinner, Homer breaks down a door with an axe ("Heeeere's Johnny!"), only to find the room vacant (a "D'oh!").
While defending himself from a furious Race, Homer grabs a carbon rod and inadvertently uses it to seal the hatch. The shuttle returns safely to Earth, landing at a press convention. Although Buzz calls Homer a hero, the press only acknowledges the carbon rod; it appears on a Time cover and receives a ticker-tape parade. The next morning, the black hole grows bigger and sucks up almost all of the Simpson's stuff. Lisa asks the family if anyone threw anything in it and family denies.
Considered by many to be the best Treehouse of Horror segment ever made, “The Shinning” is also considered one of the scariest. Cutting off access to cable and beer would make anyone mad, but Homer took it a step further by going full Jack Torrance. But a strange and unexplained case of fog turns the family inside out.
The line was later changed from "non-fictional" to "non-Brazilian". Groening was confused as to the reason for the change, since he liked the original so much. In fact, he did not even understand what the new line implied.
In 1994, film magazine Empire declared "Deep Space Homer" a "contender for the greatest episode ever", listing it as the third-best Simpsons parody of a film. In 1998, TV Guide listed it in its list of top twelve Simpsons episodes. In his 2004 book Planet Simpson, Chris Turner cited the episode as one of his five favorites. As well as Entertainment Weekly's praise, IGN voted it first on their list of the best segments in the Treehouse of Horror series, with Time and Punishment coming fourth.
